Cardigans & Steeks, 10

Looks like we were having fun knitting over the break. There’s a lot of show n’ tell projects. Candi made this cute bunny with alpaca yarn which makes it very soft using the pattern Diane shared with us in class last year.

Here's two sides of Julie's beautiful 3-dimensional, free form purse. The handles are from Mood's in New York, known as the store for "Project Runway."

Diana used yarn bought at Fiber's making this BSJ very soft; the colors are nice too.

Irene thinks she used Red Heart baby yarn and cannot remember the name of it or find the label.

Our class does not like to be in photos, but we do like to see the cardigans on the person who made them. So, here are Bea and Nancy's beautiful handiworks.

Linda demonstrated how to transfer a photo onto fabric using the Australian Photo Transfer method. It works really well, looks good, and takes little time. A couple of ladies are going to use this method for the faces of their knitted icons.

Materials needed are a photo copy of image (copy on the dark side using toner, no laser or color copies), newspaper, fabric (natural fiber such as silk, cotton, or muslin), real gum spirited turpentine, a metal spoon (plastic will break). Turpentine can be bought at Dawn’s next to Raley’s; a 10% discount is given to Linda’s students.

Put newspaper or paper towel on table. Put fabric on top of newspaper. Then put photocopy image face down on top of fabric. Spread turpentine all over the back of the fabric whish is facing you. Burnish (press) with metal spoon until image is transferred on fabric. Rinse the fabric so it does not smell like turpentine. Iron to set it.

Class Schedule
There is no class next week since we voted to take this week off some time ago. There are only two more sessions left, April 30 and May 7. A potluck is scheduled on May 7 and sign ups began on Thursday evening.

Club or Not to Club
We are back to the drawing board on finding a place for our club. Wilta did a great job finding a place and giving us details, but the church turned us down since they felt we did not qualify as a class. We were classified as an event, but the fees are way too high. It is too soon to give up on our first try, so let’s keep looking.

Easter Egg Challenge
There were seven darling Easter eggs entered in the challenge.

First place, Goldfish Bowl w/Surprise, Irene
Second place, Lemon, Teri
Third place, Embroidered Flowers, Diana

Knitted Icons
Linda showed us her Eve doll in progress and how the breasts were knitted in. Diana printed out a list of the top 200 pop icons for us. She also volunteered to take charge of collecting the dolls for this year’s shows such as the Art Walk and Cal Expo. An email was sent out this week regarding the Cal Expo exhibit, and Diana will need a couple of finished dolls before May 29 to send photos to the art committee.

Baby Surprise Jackets for Women’s Shelter
April 30 is the last class Karen will be gathering knitted baby items to give to a women’s shelter. Several hats, blankets, baby surprise jackets, and stuffed animals have been donated.

Enjoy the weather and finishing your projects!

Pat belongs to a vintage doll club and made this peddler. It is absolutely perfect. Linda knitted mini socks for the peddler's tray.

Karen made these nice socks and said it does not take long to make.

Louise made these baby socks using yarn that was partially made with corn.

The baby hat that Louise knitted is very soft; she used soy yarn.

Rosemary found this pattern on raverly.com. It is a drop stitch pattern and very pretty.

Cardigans & Steeks

How are the cardigans and Easter eggs coming along? The felted Easter egg challenge is due when we come back from Spring break, April 16.

We have only three more classes left: April 16, 30, and May 7. There will be no class on April 23.

See you on the 16th. Happy knitting!

Cardigans & Steeks, 9

More Baby Surprise Jackets are Done!
Laurie made this sweet jacket by alternating two colors of yarn.

Georgia will be finishing this soft pastel BSJ for her granddaughter just in time to wear for Easter.

Irene added a collar to match the buttons.

Rosemary found this cute top down pattern on Raverly.com.

This week we discussed in length whether we should form our own club or not, and we went over handouts on making pockets and afterthought pockets for our cardigans. Also a good handout on steeks was distributed.

Our Condolences to Julie
We also received some sad news. Julie’s husband died unexpectedly earlier this week. He had many ongoing illnesses, beat pancreatic cancer, and type one diabetes. On an excursion in the canyon, he collapsed and was life flighted to Sutter Roseville. CPR was started but after over an hour they pronounced him deceased. Although they have been separated for about a year, they share two boys together. They are still in shock, but are coping. There will be services in about a month. A beautiful article was printed on the first page of the Auburn Journal. All of us send our prayers to Julie and her family.

Class Schedule
Only three more classes are left this session, April 16, 30, and May 7. Classes will not be held on April 9 and 23.

Club or Not to Club
Linda will mail in her class proposals for the Fall session to PSA on April 3. The theme for the Fall class will be Hip to be Squared (or is it Knit to be Square?); the projects will be knitted from squares into all kinds of things. Both the Monday morning and Thursday evening classes will be working on the same projects.

The major question of the evening was whether we should form our own club or stay with Placer School for Adults (PSA). The PSA session for the Fall will be shorter (no longer than 6 sessions or 12 hours) and the fees will be considerably higher. If we formed our own club at the church Wilta looked into, Bea calculated that we will need a minimum of 24 people at a fee of $60 for 12 sessions and a few key leaders.

Linda handed over all the money raised from the bra to Louise who volunteered to be our banker. Bea is Louise’s assistant, Wilta is our location coordinator; and Linda L. volunteered to be our “ring leader,” the person in charge of registration for the club. Of course, Linda will be our instructor, who can only have four out of the seven classes she teaches next Fall, and her classes are going to be slowly phased out of PSA because the State is saying that the two areas that are to be eliminated from the adult school list are Construction for Homes and Home Economics.

According to a show of hands, everyone is in agreement in forming our own club. To make it official and easier for each person to say yea or nay, an email will be sent to each of us to respond whether we would like to be a part of this club. In order for this club to work, everyone will need to sign up and pay in full before each session begins.

Easter Egg Challenge
The Easter Egg challenge is due when we come back from Spring break, April 16.

Knitted Icons
The updated sign up sheet for the knitted icon was available for review. The deadline has been moved to the end of May. Diana will keep us informed with the itinerary for the Art Walk held on June 11. If the icons are not accepted for show by the Art Walk committee, they will be displayed at Cabin Fever.

Baby Surprise Jackets for Women’s Shelter
If you would like to donate your Baby Surprise Jacket (BSJ) or any other knitted baby items to a women’s shelter, Karen Muir is looking into it and will take them to the location for us. Please contact Karen if interested. A deadline has not been set since we are still working on our BSJs.

Have a lovely Spring break and Easter.

Candi made a beautiful scribble lace scarf with ribbon and beads added to the fringe.

Vickie made a cool potholder by felting the fair isle piece from the steek exercise.

Vickie and Diane worked on felted art using alpaca yarn; they are very soft and light.
