Summer 5

Finished Projects in July

Plastic Grocery Bag Purse
I found a pattern by Michelle Molis at http://mimoknits.typepad.com/knitting/2008/04/index.html that inspired me to make this one (scroll down to April 22, 2008 on her site). I changed the pattern as I went along since I wanted it bigger and was able to clean out my plastic bag stash. I still need to mold it into shape for a cleaner line.

Remember this from May?

Now it is finished.

Has anyone been reading ravelry.com? There are groups on Ravelry with a knitting challenge which is to start a knitting project during the opening ceremony of the Olympics and finishing it before the closing ceremony. It is huge.

Summer 4

Congratulations for winning the Award of Merit for the bras!

To recap, Diana sent two email messages this week. One listed all the awards and the other had three attachments regarding:
"1. the letter they sent announcing judging results and our award.
2. the 'invitation' to attend the Awards Night on Thursday August 14th (free parking and no ticket required to attend).
3. a map."
She suggested carpooling for this event.

Diana also sent an email last Friday regarding "a fun new knitting (felting) project that uses old wool sweaters. If any of you have old sweaters you are ready to part with, I would love to have them! I am looking for mostly solids, browns, creams, and pastels, but I will take anything! I am perusing our local thrift stores. Thanks! Diana."

Liz sent an email in the last week regarding an Auburn knitting group that meets at Courthouse Coffee at 1425 Lincoln Way on Tuesdays. According to the Courthouse Coffee website, "Every Tuesday evening starting at 6 pm is the Auburn Knit Night. A fun filled night of knitters at all levels."

Here is a fun little quiz called, What Kind of Yarn Are You?
You do not have to log in or have a password. Highlight, copy and paste the website instead of typing in the long address.

Have a great week!

Summer 3

16 knotty knitters gathered at Carolyn's fun pool party. It was nice to see each other, catch up on summer activities, and cool off. At the party, Julie made an announcement about being a volunteer for the art display at Cal Expo. If you are interested, please contact her.

Summer 2

Self-striping yarn is a mystery at first; Liz is making a sock which is turning out nicely.
Roberta is crocheting a doily from this pretty green pattern.
These lip balm holders only took an hour apiece to make. The pattern is from http://mimi.csa.googlepages.com/freepatterns. Since I just learned to crochet this spring and the pattern is fast and easy, I didn't hesitate to make these. Bev came up with the idea of attaching it to a zipper, and it looked cute.

How is your summer? This week I visited the local yarn store called Fendari in Half Moon Bay. The shop is on Main Street and is packed with a lot of pretty yarn. They have some big, beautiful star burst rugs that were crocheted out of chunky yarn and perhaps felted. They were interesting, and I regret not taking my camera because I like the colors, size and shape of them. I was also surprised and pleased to find the magazine called, Knitter's (knittinguniverse.com), at the HMB library; the patterns gave me a lot of ideas and there was a star afghan pattern that looked like the rug in the summer issue.

Liz tried to visit two local yarn shops in Oregon listed on the internet; unfortunately, they closed down. While talking to Lisa at Auburn Needleworks, she found out that it is a very difficult time for yarn shop owners, especially in the summer.

Liz also received an email from another group of knitters in town that they want to make the bras after seeing them from the Art Walk. What fun; this idea may grow into something. Louise and her daughter have started to work on the bra calendar, and the bras will be displayed at Cal Expo this summer. We have a lot to look forward to. Did you know that a sexy lingerie website from the UK linked the article from the Auburn Journal? The site is www.zimbio.com/Sexy+Lingerie+UK, and the article is under the tab "News"; scroll all the way down until you come to "Knit Bras." I found it through google; and no, I was not looking for sexy lingerie. My face is red now.

Carolyn will be sending us directions to her house soon. The potluck is next Thursday at 6 p.m. Things to bring would be your knitting, swimsuit and towel, food, and/or the teddy bear for the Mother Bear project if you made one.

If you are having knitting class withdrawals, come to the potluck and/or email us with a time and place; there may be a few in town who would like to get together. Knit on!

Summer 1

Mother Bear Project. Embroidering the face was the hardest.

Happy Birthday to all July knitters! It's only been a week since class ended, but I already miss your show 'n tells. Summer is a good time to finish projects from the spring class and start some new ones you didn't have time for. I work on the unfinished projects early in the summer as an incentive to start on new patterns. This way I get them done and don't have any old class projects left unfinished when the new class starts.

LYS on Vacation
Are you going to stop at a local yarn shop (LYS) while on vacation? Tell us about it. I stopped at The Wool Tree in South Lake Tahoe. She has EZ Bobs like the ones Linda showed us for intarsia (one package of small and one package of large) for $2.25 a package and will order the medium size soon. If you are there, she has drop-in knit night on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. I told her about our bra challenge, and she picked out a couple of skeins she would have used which are beautiful.

Resume for the State Fair
To the knotty knitters showing bras at the state fair, please send a brief paragraph about yourself to Diana asap (this week). Bras and resumes will be taken to the fair next week. See her email for details. Diana has been going through some ups and downs with the state fair committee's decisions. The flexibility and fast response to emails from our ladies, the willingness to help, and Diana's professionalism and dedication are very impressive.

Summer Pool Party
Carolyn is really looking forward to having us at her house on July 17 and hoping for a good crowd. An email will be coming around the mountain later this month.

Fall Registration
The news from Linda is that registration starts August 26.

Calendar

Before July 11. Get bras and bios to Diana or Julie for the state fair.

July 17. Carolyn's Pool & Potluck Party.

August 26. Registration for Fall classes.

All summer. Collect yarn labels for Fall project.

Have a fun and safe 4th of July!
